What other students say

The Ball High School Resilience Program felt like a return to something familiar and important. As a former teacher, being back in the classroom reminded me how unpredictable and honest high school students can be. I challenged one student to stay off his phone for three minutes. Did push-ups with another who wants to join the military. And one flat-out told me he would never get in an electric car. It was random, meaningful, and real. The kind of space where resilience is not taught, it is experienced.

Launching an art therapy exercise at Libbie's Senior Program was one of the most impactful parts of my service-learning experience. With their support and trust, I was able to create a space where residents could express themselves through coloring and memory-sharing. During one session, a resident colored a garden scene and began telling a story about her mother's roses, which opened the door for others to share their own memories. What began as a quiet activity turned into a warm circle of storytelling, laughter, and connection. It reminded me how simple creative moments can hold deep meaning and bring people together.

I absolutely loved my time with the ACE afterschool program. One of my favorite memories was helping Ms. Thomas tutor students in the library. As I walked out the door, a 3rd grader who recognized me came running down the hall to give me a hug. It was such a small gesture, but I was truly honored that he remembered me from a previous visit.

Dedicating my time to the kids in the Galveston community has been one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences I’ve had, and I highly recommend it to everyone. I am excited to get back to volunteering during my second year of medical school! I hope there is another passion driven learning project at Oppe elementary.
